It's About Time

Let me begin this with a little history. I am white on the outside, but my mother's side of the family are of American Indian decent. In our family we call them Indians, and for the purpose of this blog that is what I will call them. My mother was raised until she was 10 by her Indian grandmother, on a reservation in North Dakota where she was born. Her sister, was sent to an Indian school to be taught how to be white, and how to fit in a white society. Her first language wasn't even English, it was some French/Indian language. My aunt lived on the same reservation with a different relative for the same basic amount of time. So my family has lived and seen the poverty.

It is about time the Progressive Liberal power structure has finally come to the light concerning the American Indians and their true problems generally, and in this society specifically. Maybe now we can have a dialogue more suited to the systematic problem, and not the politically correct one. Americans have problems in this country that are more a threat to their identity than stupid sports team names. Now the Progressive Liberal power brokers have taken notice and are on their way to help.

President Obama has proposed the Generation Indigenous initiative. An initiative to better prepare young Indians on the reservation for college, careers, and leadership. This is a step in the right direction. With suicide on the reservation for the 15 to 24 ages twice the national rate, something needs to be done about the hopelessness and despair. While I don't care for throwing money at a problem, because that is what got us here in the first place, but this is a long time in coming. What is needed is to teach young Indians better skills. This is done hand and hand, between, both the government and the tribe. This is the governments part, now the tribe needs to put forth the effort to make sure the despair and hopelessness disappears from it's members. Only then will the poverty, 20% unemployment, drug and alcohol abuse, teen pregnancy, and the high school dropout rate be reduced or outright abolished. Quit using critical resources to sue everyone in court about stupid sports names and reallocate those resources to making your own people more prosperous. It should be more about the survival of the tribe than political correctness. The former is the path to survival and the latter is the path to extinction. Hopefully this time the government will be of some help. Here is a link to the story. http://www.yumasun.com/eedition/page-a/page_f7a19708-df70-5279-8de9-9627f7f840dd.html#page_a_005
