Vaccine Distribution

In may 2020 I believed that the scientific community would develop a vaccine from scratch for the Covid 19 virus, before the end of 2020. Some 8 months. Everyone, including smarter people advised me that the vaccine would not be available until June of 2020. I was optimistic and had faith, with no empirical evidence, other than a gut feeling. I questioned how the vaccine was going to be distributed. I questioned the logistics of the distribution.

I questioned how the government, or the pharmaceutical company or whoever was going to distribute the vaccine in an efficient manner. I pointed out both the mitigating and aggravating factors of the distribution process. At the time I didn't factor all of the elements, which has exacerbated the distribution.

I first suggested that we use the National and Air Guard of each state. That was to secure the chain of custody, and to facilitate the continuity. I suggested we put the vaccine in one central spot; like a secure Guard Armory, and distribute it to the hospitals. FedEx and UPS would transport from manufacturer, to distribution centers. Using the guard will cut down the cost, and lead time. What I didn't foresee was that the vaccine transportation would be temperature controlled. That control would be 4 times as low as the best commercially available unit.

Walmart Corporation has distribution Centers all over the country. With their own trucks, they distribute their merchandise to their retail centers on an in tome basis. Which is to say, that the merchandise gets to the retail center just in time to be sold, costing the corporation less money. The Guard can do a similar distribution system. A combined public private system is beneficial for all.

I saw this problem coming 8 months ago. I guess that no one else saw it, not that I am not a genius, I just see problems and look for solutions, I care nothing about politics. The current distribution problems could be fixed by the above solutions, among others. Like using airplanes to transport the vaccine to the distribution centers, and trucks to the end user.

The distribution as of today January 8,2021, is just over 6 weeks old. Of the 20 million available doses, 4 million have been administered. The hold up seems to be at the state level. Which can be solved with the Guard. We already pay them, any so why not use them. I saw the problem at the state level, and came up with a solution. But no one wanted to hear about it. I told you so.

The nature of the freight forces the supply chain to transport the vaccine by air. The air mode accounts for 0.01% of freight moved. Using air as a  primary mode of transportation  is the answer to the underlying problem. Every state has a Guard unit, and every state has an airport. Problem solved. You are welcome.
