Holtville Accident

One more thing about the accident in Holtville. I was thinking last night about the first responders. The ones who came upon the scene and the carnage. Then on the local news the Holtville Fire Chief was interviewed. It was, he said, the worst scene he had worked in his 29 years of service. He mentioned that his responder colleagues were I their early 20's. He also said they had access to the counseling. This is the hidden cost of doing that job.

I worked the highway for 10 years. I have cleaned up accidents like this before. I have had to identify the number of occupants in a car that was wrapped around an Oak Tree at 130 mph. Among the other things I have had to do on that job. I attended post-accident debriefings, with a first responder team, and then with a professional counselor in a group setting.

I feel for the youngsters. I was older and had more life experience, and was more experienced with deceased bodies. It has been years since I thought of that particular incident and the aftermath. The report brought back memories.
